Representatives of the Catholic Church prayed for the health of Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI in Rome, after his health deteriorated earlier this week. “We are here to support him with our trusting prayer,” said Cardinal Vicar Angelo De Donatis told several hundred people in the Archbasilica of San Giovanni in Laterano, the main basilica of the diocese of Rome, of which the Pope is bishop. As planned, Pope Francis did not come to the mass. The service was De Donatis’ response to Pope Francis’ call for prayers for his predecessor. De Donatis is Francis’ governor as bishop of Rome.
