German police prevented a major hooligan attack on Union Berlin fans before the Bundesliga derby at Hertha Berlin, authorities said on Saturday. German federal police said on Twitter that about 300 people tried to attack Union supporters when a train stopped at a station in the east of the city en route to the Olympic Stadium in the west. The group were equipped with pyrotechnics and other dangerous objects. A police spokeswoman told broadcaster RBB that the attackers were thought to be Hertha fans. High-flying Union won the game 2-0 to leave Hertha second-bottom and in big relegation trouble.
