Klas Lestander, the first-ever biathlon gold medalist at the Olympics, died at the age of 91, the sport governing body IBU said on Saturday. According to the IBU statement, Sweden’s Lestander passed away on Friday. Lestander started as a cross-country skier, but he was also an experienced hunter, which led him to pursue his biathlon career. He became the first-ever biathlon medalist at the 1960 Winter Games in the United States, when the sport made its Olympic debut and consisted only of the 20-kilometres race.
